The Grand Traverse Band of the Ottawa and Chippewa Indians are developing a Civic Centre for their community of Grand Traverse, Michigan. The Civic Centre will reflect the Grand Traverse people, its culture and its heritage. It will serve the elders and the youth, with particular emphasis on serving the youth, and will function as a gathering space for the entire community. The concept for the Civic Centre is a circular design, to allow for a central gathering space. The design phases highlight the four directions. Perimeter types of occupancy will lie concentrically around the main gathering space. The primary features of the Centre will include a basketball court, running track, and various other sport and public meeting rooms. The plan has evolved in a manner that has recognized the functionality of the spaces and allowed for maximum usable floor space. The multi-purpose functionality of the Civic Centre will facilitate the staging of various events and gatherings.
