Blue Quills First Nations College sought to develop a Campus Master Plan to expand their current academic programs and give form to their identity as a pioneering body in Indigenous education.
The first building commissioned was an Arts Education Centre whose form and function was to promote a sense of pride in Indigenous heritage and reclaim traditional knowledge and practices. Comprised of two arched south-facing ‘wings’, the building embraces an open gathering space and a central ceremonial lodge. Constructed entirely of reclaimed pine-beetle infested logs, 7 independent and unique structures housing the larger programs adorn the southern façade of the building, themselves a showcase of traditional indigenous architectural forms and methods. Destined to develop as a spiritual and cultural hub for the community, the building seeks to embody the notion of ‘learning from the village’.
