This mixed use facility will feature housing, daycare, community centre and seniors residence programs to serve the Aboriginal community of Dawson Creek. The housing component will accommodate elders, singles, and couples as well as providing emergency family accommodations. The building design reflects the needs of Aboriginal people and culture. As well as functioning as comfortable circulation, the wide naturally lit and ventilated corridors will provide communal spaces for residents to mingle and socialize. The undulating corridors will generate nooks for residents to set up small public oriented spaces right outside their unit for this purpose. By allowing for the appropriation of the circulation spaces, the building offers a year round sheltered commons for community. The building plan is inspired by the outstretched wings of a soaring eagle protecting the community. The structure will be oriented to the cardinal directions and it’s form will sweep East to West, allowing for the use of passive solar strategies that will benefit the buildings LEED Gold designation requirements. |
